My day on the farm :: Week 2
“What’s that? And what’s that?” I want to know what it all looks like as it’s coming up, you know? Joey, our ever-so-patient leader and owner of Cramer Organics is so sweet and enthusiastic about educating us. It’s June in Minnesota, so it’s still early in the growing season (and muddy) and while we harvested a lot of stuff today, many crops are mere leaves, like eggplant, tomatoes, and potatoes. So after cleaning our harvests, she took us on a walk through the fields and pointed out what all the “thats” were.
But you wouldn’t really know that it was June today. The end of June, at that. It was cold. And a bit blustery. At one point, my fingers had a bit of a difficult time getting the twisty ties nice and taut around the green onions, but we got ‘er done.
Despite the serious lack of heat and sun that we’ve had, it was simply amazing to see how things had grown since last week. I can only imagine what a week-to-week difference I’ll see when the sun decides to make an appearance and things heat up. It’ll be like Christmas!
One of my favorite things from today? Seeing the bright purple, alien-like blobs sitting in the soil, ready for harvest. Beautiful. While kohlrabi may not be everyone’s favorite vegetable, there’s no denying what a pretty little alien it is, purple or green. Me, I like mine raw. And it made me feel better that Joey said that she doesn’t like kohlrabi in stir-fry either.
So what did I bring home today? Cilantro, dill, kale, chard, green onions, radishes, butterhead lettuce, lettuce mix, and arugula. Oh yeah, and kohlrabi.
Time for a hot shower.
