My day on the farm :: Week 4
I’ll keep this short and sweet. The mosquitoes were vicious yesterday. Even with bug spray. I hate to say it, but the natural stuff doesn’t work as well as Off. I’ll just have to suffer, as I ain’t sprayin’ Off on my skin.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it again. It’s amazing how the fields change in a week. Last week, no broccoli or cauliflower flower heads. This week, broccoli and cauliflower went into the CSA boxes. Joey gave me a whole extra bag of broccoli and I came home, roasted it, and ate it all.
Broccoli and cauliflower are members of the brassica family and are major cancer fighters. So are Brussels sprouts, which won’t be ready for harvest until later. You can read about brassicas’ super duper health benefits here.
Two beautiful sandhill cranes went swooping low and slow over the fields. Man, they’re loud.
This week we harvested: arugula, romaine, chard, kale, kohlrabi, beets, radishes, turnips, green onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and basil. Ah, the basil. You can get intoxicated harvesting the stuff. I wanted to just bury my face in it.
I just ate my second easy peasy Caprese salad. Extra basil please.
Here is some more classic country for your listening pleasure. I like to pretend that I’m drivin’ a big rig back to the city.
