Thyroid Cookbook Update {1}

It’s ‘bout time that we gave you a juicy update on our Fire Your Thyroid Cookbook (our working title). While Lisa and I have been hard at work on our labor of love, we feel that things have recently coalesced to a point that we’re able to share a worthy summary of our progress.

We’ve heard your comments:

“You can’t write this thing fast enough.”
“I’m dying to get my hands on this cookbook.”
“When o’ when will it be available?”

The short answer? Early 2014. (If you’re not already signed up to receive our cookbook updates, go here.)

We know that there is a dire need for this cookbook – there’s simply nothing out there that caters specifically to the thyroid- and immune-challenged community. But we’re changing all of that.

Many of my clients say, “I don’t know what to eat.” Now you’ll know! While much of my work with clients centers around specific nutrition for the thyroid and immune system, I’ve never had a go-to meal planning resource or cookbook. So Lisa and I are creating it.

Will our cookbook be the “cure” for hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? No. But given that diet plays a HUGE role in nourishing and supporting both the thyroid and the immune system, eating right is a HUGE step in the right direction – one of the most impactful and beneficial steps.

Some of you may remember that back in August, after Lisa’s and my working vacation with our families in the wild north of Minnesota (below is a picture of us during one of our working sessions), I promised a free resource – a “springboard” for the cookbook.

Little did I know how long it would take us to create it (think late nights, weeding wide-eyed through the subjective nature of nutrition, and some hair-splitting), but…it’s almost complete. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into this resource and we can’t wait for you to see it.

Rest assured, we don’t subscribe to “nutritionism.” According to this Wiki link, “[Michael] Pollan argues that nutritionism as an ideology has overly complicated and harmed American eating habits. He says that rather than focusing on eating nutrients, people should focus on eating the sort of food that their ancestors would recognize.”

So what is this springboard, exactly? Well, I’d like to leave a little mystery in the air – let’s just say that it’s going to jumpstart your thyroid- and immune-friendly meals, like, now!

It’s in the hands of my graphic designer for a little prettying-up and I’ll notify you when it’s ready for your eyes. We’re SO proud of it.

Here are some other tidbits about our progress. Our cookbook will contain about 100 recipes, including a hefty educational component, including resources such as:

  • Pantry staples
  • Stocking a safe and non-toxic kitchen
  • Label-reading tips
  • Recommended kitchen tools and gadgets
  • A flavor profiles guide
  • And last but certainly not least, nutritional strategies for taming the autoimmune response and driving those thyroid antibodies down and explanations of why the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in our recipes boost thyroid function.

Also…

  • We have a killer Minneapolis/Denver-based legal team behind us.
  • We’ve established our own publishing company for our cookbook, Healthful Elements Press LLC. Lots o’ legal stuff to wrangle. Wow.
  • We plan on teasing you with occasional recipes on this blog.
  • We’ve hired a book designer, food photographer, and editor.
  • We’ve got recipe testers on board.
  • We’ve got many influential movers and shakers who are poised and ready to promote this cookbook like crazy.
  • We’ve got a couple of special guest recipe writers on board, including the insanely talented Melissa Joulwan, author of Well Fed and Well Fed 2. Mel has been WILDLY helpful to our book-writing process. We cannot thank her enough – she’s been a guide, a sounding board, and an all-around bada** in helping us navigate the madcap world of self-publishing.
  • Lisa is in the throes of getting her new website up. Check out her gorgeous new logo. You can follow her on Facebook and Instagram – @cooktonourish.

Our first iteration of this cookbook will not be our last – we plan on writing a series. Look out!

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for the launch of our springboard and for some recipes.

- Where's this cookbook, it's been mentioned for years now. This is May 2015 -still no cookbook.

I have been following the AIP diet for almost a year.

Well, Evie, since you asked so nicely – I’ll tell you why it hasn’t been published. Firstly, we decided to write this cookbook in late 2012. So it’s been 2.5 years. Many say that do to a cookbook RIGHT, it can take 3-5 years. In the meantime, we spent weeks creating the nutritional springboard for our cookbook (a free resource that many are using and benefitting from) and worked with a legal team to start our own publishing company – that took half a year.

Lisa, my co-author, has struggled intensely with Lyme disease. After years of therapy, she was just given the clear that all is well.

As for me, in the last 1.5 years, my father, brother, and mother have died. I also have a full practice and have grown my team from one person to five people. And we adopted a baby.
